Swindon Town boss Richie Wellens is not applying for the vacant Doncaster Rovers job.

The 39-year-old is one of the favourites for the Keepmoat Stadium hot seat but has ruled himself out of the running.

The League One side are in the hunt for a new manager to replace Grant McCann, who left them to join Hull City on Friday.

Wellens, who played just under 700 games in his playing days, had two separate spells as a player for Donny.

He got his first manager’s job at Oldham Athletic from September 2017 to June 2018 before taking over at Swindon last November.

Wellens has said, as per a report by the Swindon Advertiser: “I wanted loyalty off of some players towards the end of last season. And I think it’d be wrong of me not to show that loyalty back. I’m starting to build my own team now, which is difficult to get.”

It’d be wrong of me to walk away at the first opportunity. If I was asked ‘would I like to manage Doncaster Rovers?’ – yes, I would. But that’s in years and years to come. I’ve got a very good job here, and I’m starting to bond with the supporters. I want that to get stronger, and it’s important that relationship continues to get stronger.”

He added: “For bookmakers, it’s an easy one. I’ve played for Doncaster and have got a lot of time for the club.”
